The Commercial Project Manager/Project Controller will serve as a business partner to the Technical Project Manager in the execution of large customer contracts (“Projects”) in the Steel-making Industry. The Project Controller ensures that project management is performed with financial integrity and contract effectiveness. This includes oversight of all contractual obligations, on-time delivery of goods and services, adherence to contract terms and conditions, avoidance of risk, controlling of project budgets and cash flow, and supporting procurement and sales negotiations to protect the interests of the Company and to achieve the Company’s goals.
The Project Controller will be assigned 3-5 Projects, depending upon contract size and complexity. The classification level and salary will be dependent on expertise and prior experience. Will be responsible for performing the following duties on his/her assigned Projects:
- Project forecasting and reporting of costs, revenue and cash flow
- Timely billings and cash collections according to contract, including but not limited to milestone achievements
- Identify and partner with business to mitigate and anticipate potential risk
- Preparing and negotiating contract change orders and claims
- Fulfilling the contractual insurance, guarantee and bond requirements
- Controlling costs against project budgets, approving project purchase requisitions and performing the Goods Receipts function in SAP
- Preparing bank presentations for drawing from Export Letters of Credit
- Preparing commercial/proforma invoices for exportation of goods
- Monitoring aging/blocked balance sheet items such as Accounts Payables and Accounts Receivables and resolving discrepancies
- Acting as a liaison between Project Management and the Accounting, Controlling Treasury, Procurement, Expediting and Logistics organization of the Company
- Financial responsibility related to project closing, month end and other commercial activities
- Continuous Process Improvement
Required Skills/Knowledge, Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree (advanced degree may be substituted for work experience, if applicable)
- At least 5 years of work experience in a project team environment
- Work experience in an industrial segment such as Metals, Mining, Marine, Paper, Cement or Power Generation and Distribution
- A successful candidate will bring a diverse background in finance roles where leadership skills were required and will demonstrate an attitude which positively influences the project team
- A strong systems knowledge is required. Systems include SAP, Business Warehouse, and excellent Microsoft Office skills.
- Experience with financial reporting and accounting guidelines and experience interacting with external auditors
- Knowledge of work breakdown structure or chart of accounts helpful
- International commercial terms (INCOterm) exposure helpful
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret common financial reports and contract documents
- Experience interacting and negotiating with customers and sub-suppliers
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work closely with people at all levels of the organization and facilitate the implementation of corrective action and best-practice sharing
- Strong work ethic, confidence, self-motivation, honesty, open communication style, flexibility, action oriented, and strong sense of urgency
- Proficiency in a foreign language an added plus
- Project Management experience/certification
