Title:  Senior Design Engineer

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE: 

Primetals Technologies are looking for someone to join their Mechanical Engineering department. This department is responsible for providing an engineering service for the company in either an individual capacity or as part of a team, normally supervising others.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the Mechanical Engineering of a specific portion of a project.

Project responsibilities include; productivity, technical output quality, resource control, progress, product standardisation, health and safety and compliance.

 
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / TASKS:
 

• Produce technically compliant and cost effective design documentation; drawings, specifications, schedules, calculations, manuals etc. for a specific area/equipment and meet project requirements and company operating procedures / statutory obligations.
• Ensure that the design and documentation of Mechanical equipment is produced to the required standards, within budget and agreed time scales.
• Work with the principal / lead engineer as the technical focus for a specific portion of a project ensuring a successful and commercially viable contract execution. This would include monitoring and reporting budgets, progress, KPI's and change management.
• Support and supervise other engineers assigned to the same area/equipment to ensure they are producing technically compliant and cost-effective design documentation; drawings, specifications, schedules, calculations, manuals etc. and meet project requirements and company operating procedures / statutory obligations.
• Ensure that team members comply with the company operating procedures and statutory obligations. Participate in project Design & Safety Reviews, Risk Assessments etc.
• Report to the principal / lead engineer and/or departmental manager on all matters relating to the project.
• Provide assistance to other disciplines within the Project team
• Co-ordinate, liaise with and monitor third party design / detail output to ensure project (Quality, schedule and budget) and statutory requirements are met.
• Assist in the preparation of engineering man-hour and/or merchant account budgets for the pre-project bids ensuring budgets are at a suitable level to obtain new business whilst still being sufficient to allow successful project execution.
• Assist the Sales Dept. in a technical capacity with customer negotiations, both in the office and at client’s premises
• Assist in a technical capacity with supplier negotiations
• Participate in customer meetings and training, both on site and in the office
• Provide technical support to ensure that equipment is manufactured, tested, installed and commissioned in accordance with the design and operational requirements, either from the office or at site
• Develop, maintain and cultivate relationships with Clients, Suppliers and Sub Contractors to ensure successful execution of the project, future business.

COMPETENCIES
 
Knowledge & Skills: 
 
Essential:
 

• Substantial design experience and knowledge of the relevant technology area (Metals industry)
• Experience in machine design and drafting.
• Experience of function within large projects including installation and start-up and commissioning
• Ability to be able to communicate on both technical and non-technical issues
• Working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and requirements
• Must be self-motivated and proficient in time management
• Ability to multi-task and set priorities for self and others
• Experience of managing budgets
• IT literate with all department and business system tools, especially AutoCad

 
Desirable
 

• Experience of 3D engineering design software. E.g. Solid Edge, Inventor or Solid Works
• Understanding of Project Management, Planning, Procurement, Sales and R&D disciplines
• Experienced in managing budgets
• Keep pace with current developments and in particular those of our competitors

 
Experience: 
 
Essential:
 

• Experience of project engineering and the project lifecycle from sales through to installation/commissioning from a specific disciplined engineering view.
• Experience of team management during project execution, both office based and site based.
• Must be able to solve problems quickly and positively. Take an active part in the decision making of the engineering team.

Exposure to different cultures from around the world leading to sensitivity towards those differing cultures.
