Job Description: 

SUMMARY

The selected candidate shall possess an understanding of operating processes and mechanical systems related to Utility Boilers and/or Air Quality Control Systems (AQCS). AQCS systems may include Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), evaporative wastewater treatment systems, and other systems typically found in power plant and industrial environment. Candidate shall support proposal and contract activities. Close collaboration with other engineering disciplines, commercial department and project operations department is required. While the candidate is expected to perform the basic functions relevant to that of a Mechanical Engineer, the expectation is that the candidate will ultimately transition on full time basis to the position of a Project Engineer. A continuous overlap of both responsibilities is anticipated, with the main concentration depending on the volume of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Mechanical Engineer

  • Preparation of DI sheets for Proposals and Projects. DI sheets are basic Design Information documents used by the engineering department as the basis of its engineering and design activities. They are based on MPW Standards, contractual obligations, and applicable codes.
  • Preparation of technical specifications for mechanical equipment, including, but not limited to, blowers, fans, dampers, valves, skids, etc.
  • Pressure loss calculations in boiler systems, gas flues and air ducts, AQCS systems, fuel piping systems and other types of piping systems.
  • Pipeline sizing, material selection and pressure drop calculations.
  • Valve sizing and selection.
  • Vendor bid/proposal technical and commercial evaluations, with recommendations regarding vendor selection.
  • Vendor Drawing/Document reviews, commenting and approval.
  • Liaison with equipment suppliers.
  • Mechanical equipment sizing and selection.
  • Providing recommendations regarding general arrangements of equipment for complete process systems. This shall include physical equipment locations, equipment orientation, and working with equipment suppliers to ensure all necessary information required for design purposes, such as dimensions and foundation loading, is provided on a timely basis.
  • Preparation and maintenance/updating of Line Lists, Valve Lists, Equipment Lists, Terminal Point Lists and Specialty Items Lists.
  • P&ID line tagging, valve tagging, and equipment tagging.
  • Provide proposal preparation support, including review of the RFQ technical documents, equipment pricing solicitation for budgeting purposes, and prepare a list of technical exceptions and clarifications.
      • Support the project execution team during contract execution phase of a project. Such support may include meetings with customers, technical review meetings with customer’s engineering staff or AE, and meetings with equipment vendor suppliers.
      • Interface and collaborate with the Proposal and Project teams, and other engineering disciplines to assure successful outcome of proposal preparation and contract execution.

 

Project Engineer

      • Assist the Project Manager with all technical aspects of project execution.
      • Direct responsibility for the engineering activities on the assigned projects.
      • Monitor and forecast, in collaboration with the project controls group, engineering progress and performance against the plan.
      • Conduct regular meetings with the engineering team to ensure project work is completed on time and in accordance with contractual requirements.
      • Meet with customers, as required, to support regularly scheduled project review meetings.
      • Prepare and implement mitigation plans to address project schedule, financial and commercial concerns.
      • Ensure all engineering project contractual milestones are being achieved.
      • Collaborate with the project controls department on the preparation of project engineering work plans and monthly update of the same.
      • Actively participate in the preparation of project procurement plans and provide input to the project control team for accurate status updates.
      • Participate in monthly project review meetings and be prepared to discuss and provide accurate status on all topics related to engineering.
      • Ensure the technical and commercial evaluations of all project work packages are performed accurately and on time, supporting the overall project schedule requirements.
      • When necessary, perform Mechanical Engineering duties described above.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to work independently and with others.

  • Continuously seek ways to improve products and processes to reduce their overall installed cost.
  • Review of documents generated by other disciplines to ensure their accuracy.
  • Development and preparation of engineering and design standards.
  • Meeting with project counterparts at other MPW locations, as needed.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EDUCATION

Education and/or Experience: Requires general knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering related to Power Plant and/or AQCS systems. Candidate shall possess the necessary academic credentials with demonstrated internship experience or other relevant work experience. Candidate shall possess a BS degree in mechanical. If the candidate is not a registered Professional Engineering, it is expected that he/she will obtain such certification within 5 years. Candidate shall have strong leadership, communication, and presentation skills.

Language Skills: Candidate must be fluent in English. Effective communication skills, verbal and written, are essential to the performance of this job.

Mathematical Skills: Candidate must possess the necessary mathematical skills required to perform the work and responsibilities described herein.

Reasoning Ability: Must be able to make critical decisions, direct people, and delegate responsibility.

Computer Skills: Candidate must be literate in using common MS Office software including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and possibly Access. Familiarity with computer engineering tools such as ANSYS, piping stress analysis programs, drafting software is welcome, however not required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Candidate will work in an office environment. Short term traveling is required and will include customer visits, vendor visits and travel to MPW’s headquarters. International travel may be required and therefore, Candidate must possess a passport. Visits to industrial and power plant settings are required and considered normal part of this position.

 

JOB LOCATION

This position is with Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc., New Generation Systems (NGS), Environmental Solutions division located in Basking Ridge, NJ. Candidate will have to report to the office located at 645 Martinsville Rd., Basking Ridge, NJ 07920 in accordance with the corporate guidelines.
