SCOPE:

 

The Senior Payroll Tax Analyst is responsible for ensuring the ongoing payroll tax and compliance for MHIA and its North American affiliates. This role will work with a cross-functional team that includes Payroll, HR, Finance/Accounting and third-party vendors to ensure payroll accuracy, compliance, and the overall success of the payroll operations.

 

The ideal candidate will have an Accounting degree and at least 6 years of payroll tax experience at a large organization. Must have in-depth knowledge of payroll tax laws and regulations and possess great Excel and analytical skills.

 

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Tax and Payroll Compliance:

    • This position will serve as Subject Matter Expert and escalation point for complex payroll and tax issues.
    • Research and interpret federal and state regulatory requirements.
    • Resolve tax, withholding, garnishment, and wage/hour issues for payroll processing.
    • Ensure accurate setup and system maintenance of SUI rates, including registration of new accounts and verification of SUI rates by work location.
    • Audit payroll registers, quarterly tax filings/reports, and W-2s, ensuring taxable benefits are accounted for properly.
    • Verify state and local taxes are being withheld correctly.
    • Support regulatory payroll audit requests as required.

Payroll Processing and Reporting:

    • Download all periodic payroll files, including Quarterly/Annual SODs for tax filing.
    • Prepare and provide payroll-related reports as requested.
    • Analyze, audit, reconcile, and resolve complex payroll, tax, and employee issues.
    • Complete various reports, such as Multiple Worksite and Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.
    • Perform detailed reconciliation from prior to current payroll.

 

System Management and Maintenance:

    • Responsible for the payroll system maintenance as needed.
    • Assist in ensuring that employee payroll records, payroll systems, and databases are up-to-date and accurate.

Financial Analysis and Compliance:

    • Ensure payroll reporting and payments are compliant with company policy, generally accepted accounting principles, and federal, state, and IRS regulations.

Confidentiality and Data Protection:

    • Protect confidential information by not communicating, disclosing to, or using it for the benefit of third parties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Education Requirement: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience: At least 6 years of payroll tax experience in multi-state withholding and multi-state unemployment tax filing, preferably in a large corporate setting.
  • Any special skills/training/certifications:
    • In-depth knowledge of payroll tax laws and regulations
    • Expert Analytical Skills and strong Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, v-lookups, etc.)
    • Proficient in payroll processing software
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • FPC or CPP certification preferred.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Weekend/late night work if applicable: Standard business hours with additional hours required during peak tax and payroll processing seasons.
  • Lifting/physical requirements: Regularly required to sit for long period, stand, walk, talk and/or hear. Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
