Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc. (MHIA) is looking for a Tax Manager to join our team. This role is onsite and based out of our Houston HQ Office located in the Galleria District.

SCOPE:
The Tax Manager will actively participate in the development of the corporate tax department to ensure compliance with federal and state tax reporting requirements and ASC740 Accounting for Income Taxes. The Tax Manager will provide tax support and accounting expertise to various stakeholders such as outsourced CPA Firm with return filing, external and Internal Auditors as well as MHIA’s management team.
The ideal candidate will have at least a minimum of six (6) years of related experience in federal and/or state income tax experience in a corporate tax department or Big Four public accounting firm; plus a minimum of two (2) years of experience leading, supervising, or developing accounting employees.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership, guidance and oversight for corporate tax matters:
- Play an active role in the development of tax planning strategies, including those related to changing tax laws and regulations as well as available tax credits and exemptions.
- Identify, evaluate and consult with tax advisors to best position the company with respect to tax planning strategies.
- Ensure the company maintains up-to-date tax expertise and awareness of federal, state and international tax laws and their impact on the company.
- Perform tax research, including a comprehensive review of tax issues and completion of written memorandums with recommended course of action;
- Manage Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) Team who prepare Tax Packages to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reconciliation with Financial Statements and General Ledger.
Manage tax risk and tax audits:
- Implement and manage corporate tax policies and procedures to ensure company-wide compliance.
- Collaborate with Tax Accountant, accounting/finance and business personnel to identify potential exposures or process deficiencies and implement solutions.
- Maintain strong relationship with external auditors. Interface with outside tax consultants (accounting and tax counsel) and other professional associates related to all tax audit matters.
- Work with the Tax Accountant to ensure that all tax records, reconciliations and workpapers are properly maintained to defend tax returns in the event of tax audits, including those related to Federal income tax and state/local tax
- Participate in tax audits, including the coordination of information and research of tax issues, making recommendations to management;
- Assist with the preparation and review of responses to various State and Federal tax notices.
Tax compliance
- Provide oversight and coordination of all aspects for the annual preparation of tax returns
- Review and supervise the Tax Accountant’s preparation of tax information for federal corporate income tax returns.
- Review and supervise the Tax Accountant’s preparation of apportionment data for state income and franchise tax returns.
- Review of drafts and final Federal Income, State income and franchise tax returns.
- Review and supervise the Tax Accountant’s work in the tax depreciation system, including analysis of depreciation and gain/loss computations.
- Work closely with the Tax Accountant and other business functions to efficiently obtain required tax data and to simplify/automate tax reporting processes and procedures.
Tax accounting
- Ensure proper application of ASC 740 and other tax accounting pronouncements, including those related to uncertain tax positions.
- Lead and coordinate with Tax Accountant all aspects of quarterly and annual accounting for income taxes, state/local taxes, and related financial reporting.
- Review quarterly tax provisions, reconcile current and deferred taxes, and complete schedules for year-end audited statements.
- Ensure compliance with the financial close cycle calendar in coordination with accounting personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
- Experience: Minimum of six (6) years of related experience in federal and/or state income tax experience in a corporate tax department or Big Four public accounting firm.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience leading, supervising, or developing accounting employees.
- Strong understanding of U.S. tax laws, including BEAT, 163(j), FDII, IRA tax credits, and transfer pricing.
- Proficient tax research skills
- Strong experience with fixed assets and fixed asset software (SAP and/or SAGE).
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite applications.
- Working knowledge of tax compliance software (OneSource and/or CorpTax), and online tax research tools (Checkpoint)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to explain complex tax issues to senior leadership and parent company.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- CPA license is preferred.
- Master’s degree in Taxation or CPA-track advanced coursework is a plus.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Location: Corporate office – Houston, TX
- Travel: 20%
- Weekend/late night work if applicable: Occasionally.
- Lifting/physical requirements: Regularly required to sit for long period, stand, walk, talk and/or hear. Frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
