Role Overview
The Senior Piping Engineer supports the project execution team by developing piping system designs that meet code, contract, and schedule requirements for Mitsubishi Power’s Gas Turbine power projects in the Americas. The role primarily focuses on piping systems related to large frame industrial gas turbines, with potential expansion to other plant piping systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and apply ASME B31.1 and B31.3 Codes to ensure piping requirements are accurately defined and implemented.
- Respond to piping technical inquiries from customers, vendors, and field personnel with minimal supervision.
- Review project contracts, schedules, and requirements to determine piping deliverables and deadlines.
- Coordinate with the parent company to establish timelines and obtain key documents on schedule.
- Participate in project kick-off meetings and maintain master piping document lists.
- Prepare and evaluate purchase specifications for piping fabrication, pipe supports, and specialty components.
- Collaborate with purchasing to expedite subcontractors, including reviewing progress reports and conducting shop visits.
- Review piping isometrics, mechanical drawings, P&IDs, and equipment drawings.
- Prepare piping component lists using P&IDs and 3D model reports.
- Establish corrective actions to address nonconformance and improve quality.
- Understand and guide piping design philosophy and occasionally perform piping design tasks.
- Prepare, review, and maintain piping-related calculations.
- Perform and review piping stress analysis using CAESAR II.
- Prepare work packages for third-party engineering firms and oversee deliverables.
- Apply knowledge of materials and piping hardware to support technical specifications and purchasing.
- Provide leadership, mentorship, and process improvements within the piping engineering function.
- Interface with EPC contractors, customers, and affiliated companies in scheduled meetings.
- Manage technical information exchange with subcontractors and project managers.
- Support resolution of technical issues through project execution and warranty phases.
- Assist purchasing in supplier qualification and strategy development.
- Support Application Engineering in reviewing customer specifications.
- Protect confidential information and uphold integrity.
- Travel up to 20%, including occasional international travel.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering and a minimum of 15 years of related technical experience.
- Ability to interpret technical publications, write reports, and present information effectively.
- Strong mathematical skills including geometry, trigonometry, and statistical concepts.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, and interpret technical instructions.
- Computer proficiency with 3D modeling tools, CAESAR II, spreadsheets, word processing, email, and PDF editors.
- Knowledge of relevant standards including ASME Section II, PCC, MSS-SP, and PFI.
- Familiarity with welding and NDE processes.
- Ability to meet physical demands including standing, walking, and lifting up to 50 pounds in varying noise environments.
