Role Overview
Be able to perform as technical lead in multiple technical areas within combined cycle engineering, including thermodynamic modeling, performance testing and GT upgrade evaluation. Train and mentor employees with less experience. Review technical work of others. Perform any other work necessary in support of Mitsubishi Power America’s service business, fulfilling contractual obligations and business development programs.
Key Responsibilities
The individual must be able to perform as a technical lead for the following activities, which includes combination of self-performing the work, and/or guiding, mentoring and reviewing the work of others:
- Prepare thermodynamic models using industry software of combined cycle power plants or subsets of combined cycle power plants using any combination of design information and/or operating plant data.
- Evaluate thermal performance of overall cycles and individual equipment utilizing thermodynamic and fluid mechanics engineering principles demonstrated through hand and computer calculations.
- Evaluate impact of gas turbine performance upgrades on steam cycle components (HRSG, steam turbine, pumps and heat rejection systems) and to the cycle as a whole, including cycle impact on power, heat rate and heat rejection. Determine existing equipment limits. Where necessary, make recommendations for modifications to steam cycle equipment to expand equipment limits.
- Evaluate impact of gas turbine performance upgrades on GT and ST generators.
- Coordinate with internal groups and external vendors of power plant equipment to evaluate, define and obtain proposals for modifications to steam cycle components.
- Determine the causes of steam cycle performance losses through diagnostic analysis of operational data for both steady-state and transient operation, along with physical inspection results of plant components as required.
- Respond to engineering service requests from internal and external customers.
- Interface with internal and external customers in office meetings and on site to effectively represent Mitsubishi Power by demonstrating technical expertise and customer sensitivity in order to achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis of emergent issues.
In addition, the individual will contribute to other group responsibilities including the following:
- Support the Tomoni Hub / Remote Monitoring Center in the monitoring and diagnostics of balance of plant equipment for performance and reliability purposes.
- Support the development of monitoring and diagnostic tools.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (MS preferred) from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 15 years’ thermal power generation industry experience in these areas:
- Experience with combined cycle power plant performance and thermodynamic modeling, overall cycle performance evaluation and power block equipment performance evaluation.
- Experience with conducting performance tests of combined cycle power plants, gas turbines, HRSG’s and steam turbines, in accordance with applicable performance test codes.
- Experience with evaluation of GT upgrades on HRSG’s, steam turbines and balance of plant equipment.
- Advanced personal computer skills including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), MS Teams, OneDrive, etc. Experience with Ebsilon Professional and other thermodynamic modeling tools. Experience with OSI PI tools. Equipment monitoring and diagnostics and data analytics familiarity.
- Overnight travel (up to 20%) by land and/or air, including travel to power plant locations outside the United States.
- Possess valid and up to date driver’s license and passport at all times.
- Occasional work hours outside of normal core business hours when necessary for field work or other emergent issues.
