Role Overview

The Commissioning Tuning Engineer I is responsible for applying advanced controls engineering techniques and procedures in the installation, modification, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and startup of Mitsubishi gas turbines. This position is intended for individuals with demonstrated experience in gas turbine controls or combustion tuning. The role requires a deep understanding of turbine controls and/or combustion dynamics to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and compliance with operational specifications during commissioning activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel to domestic and international job sites as required (up to 70% travel) by land and/or air for extended durations.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the combustion tuning process and theory.
  • Apply expert knowledge of combustion dynamics to identify and address combustion instabilities, pressure fluctuations, and dynamic behavior during commissioning and tuning.
  • Independently perform combustion tuning on Mitsubishi J class gas turbines, including advanced procedures such as load overshoot mitigation, Fuel Gas Temperature (FGT) tuning, ignition tuning, etc.
  • Utilize tuning tools and software such as VB tuning programs and the Combustion Adjustment Support System (CASS) system to perform data acquisition, diagnostics, and tuning adjustments.
  • Support commissioning activities, including startup, operational verification, and troubleshooting of gas turbine control systems.
  • Verify all aspects of gas turbine control systems, including slot assignments, signal output, transmitter functionality, failsafe logic, control loop operation, HMI displays, and overall system readiness.
  • Develop, implement, and troubleshoot DCS logic in support of commissioning and tuning activities.
  • Perform instrument loop checks, calculate operational setpoints, and verify control logic to ensure compliance with system specifications and performance standards.
  • Prepare and submit clear, accurate, and timely technical reports documenting site conditions, actions taken, tuning results, and recommendations for further improvement.
  • Ensure completion of all administrative and reporting requirements related to combustion tuning activities, including both internal documentation and customer-facing deliverables.
  • Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions in response to operational issues encountered during startup and commissioning.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a four-year college or university plus three (3) years of experience; or at least five (5) years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents and procedures.
  • Proficiency in preparing reports, business correspondence, and technical manuals.
  • Proficiency in database management, project management tools, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
