Mitsubishi Power Americas, Inc. in Orlando, FL is looking for a Metallurgical Engineer II.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead metallurgical portion of Root Cause efforts by creating testing plans, creating, and following schedules, reporting results for inclusion in internal and external reports
  • Provide guidance to less experienced engineers, shop, and field service personnel.
  • Independently determine approach to assigned tasks such that work can be reviewed at milestones or at completion.
  • Work on many phases or sub-tasks of a project or entire projects of moderate complexity
  • Identify requirements for outside metallographic evaluation and select vendor.
  • Give effective presentations to general audiences and write convincing proposals and reports with necessary backup material.
  • Plan and track progress on assigned metallurgical evaluations, making any changes to the plan or schedule visible to management as well as identifying ways to minimize schedule or technical deviations.
    • Log all metallurgical testing information for each specimen into established tracking database for assigned tasks.
    • Document schedule status and communicate to management weekly. Alert manager of items in danger of missing scheduled completion dates as soon as issues are encountered which will enable alternative methods to be developed to meet schedule.
  • Perform metallurgical evaluations on assigned components utilizing available resources within MHPSA or recommend outsourcing if the capabilities/capacity are not available.
    • NDE examinations (visual, hand measurements, etc.)
    • Perform coating analysis (porosity, bond strength, etc.
  • interpret creep, tensile, LCF test data, chemistry, grain size, etc.
    • Microstructural evaluations (microscope, SEM, etc.)
  • Clearly summarize observations and findings.
    • Use component drawings or pictures to document where specimens were taken
    • Orient sample images in a manner consistent with gas turbine drawings or make interpretation easier.
    • Clearly label images and provide descriptions that identify conditions for non-metallurgical personnel
  • Relate metallurgical observations to the cause of the issue (loading or environmental condition) that make the investigation necessary.
    • Utilize engineering resources with the department to develop the cause theories.
  • Review and comment on vendor reports of metallographic evaluations.
  • Maintain metallurgy laboratory and equipment. Identify equipment needing service to prevent work interruptions due to improper maintenance.
  • Support ISO 9001 audits and compliance efforts.
  • Provide meeting support by creating customer friendly reports to be reviewed by GTSE management.
  • Ensure product meets or exceeds internal and customer requirements.
  • Availability for work after normal working hours, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Perform other such duties as may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Education

  • Education and/or Experience: MS degree in materials or other metallurgical field from an accredited college or university; at least three (3) years of experience; preferred candidate will possess at least two (2) years of experience with super alloys, stainless steels and/or anti oxidation coatings relating to gas turbine components.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as industry reports, technical journals, and customer specifications. Ability to write technical reports and correspondence including customer reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Computer Skills: advanced personal computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, drawings, database, etc.
