ROLE OVERVIEW
The Data Systems Engineer is a critical role responsible for building, deploying, and troubleshooting the Mitsubishi Power Americas’ On-Site Monitoring (OSM) system. This role requires a significant depth of knowledge in each layer of the OSI networking model with specific expertise in network communication protocols and advanced networking configuration. Other beneficial knowledge includes cybersecurity best practices and regulations in the Energy sector, the operation and configuration of Operational Technology (OT) and Industrial Control system networks, and the ability to establish secure communication between these disparate systems. The Data Systems Engineer develops processes, documentation, and procedures to ensure the OSM build, and deployment meets the Mitsubishi Power Americas standards of efficient, reliable and secure plant connections. Strong written and oral communication skills and a proactive approach to collaboration with vendors, clients, and internal teams are essential to the success of this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Build & stage OSM systems: Assemble and connect hardware components, device imaging, virtual computing and network environment setup and maintenance, application of baseline configurations and operating system hardening, validation of services functionality, and documenting of the as-built configuration for each deployment.
• On-site deployment: Rack, cable, and label system components into on-site server racks and control systems, validate physical environment (i.e., power redundancy, air conditioning), and connect with on-site networks.
• On-site network commissioning (offline): Integrate and verify communications with on-site networks (i.e., VLANs, trunks, static routes, ACLs, NAT, DHCP/DNS, NTP).
• On-site remote data connectivity commissioning (online): Establish and verify communications with remote data networks (i.e., assist with VPN tunnel connection, certificates/encryption keys, and jump/secure-gateway flows); validate deployment KPIs; complete SAT checklists.
• Break/fix and root-cause analysis: Provide methodical triage across OS, hypervisor, network, and app layers; produce clear incident notes and follow-ups, adhere to change windows and site procedures.
• Documentation & handoff: Red-line site prints, update runbooks, and capture lessons learned for the team.
• Customer interface: Represent the company professionally with plant staff, IT/OT personnel, and contractors.

• Business travel with the ability to travel internationally (up to 50%) by land and/or air as needed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & EDUCATION
• Education: Bachelor's degree in information technology or computer science from an accredited college or university or technical institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience:
– 3 years of experience as an IT Systems Engineer; designing, deploying, securing, and troubleshooting IT networks.
– 3 years of experience in OT Network access system development and deployment for regulated critical infrastructure (i.e. NERC CIP regulated facilities).
– Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and overall computer navigational skills.
• Preferred Experience:
– Administrative knowledge of Aveva PI Historian and third-party applications integrated with OSM.
– Familiarity with NERC-CIP standards and working with compliant facilities and systems.
– Familiarity with industrial control system communication and networking protocols to ensure cross-platform adaptability.
– Knowledge of common Power Plant work practices.
– Netmation familiarity (protocols, data paths) is a plus, not required.
– Experience with Xona or other secure remote access gateways.
– Experience with Tanium end-point management tools.
– Palo Alto firewalls: setup, policy/NAT changes, packet capture, log analysis (GUI/CLI).
– Cisco firewalls (ASA/FTD/Firepower): setup, policy/NAT changes, packet capture, log analysis (GUI/CLI).
– ESXi/Proxmox virtualization platforms
– OPC-DA/UA connectivity exposure.
– Scripting/automation for build consistency (PowerShell, Bash).
• Language Skills: Ability to read, speak, and write English fluently. Spanish speaking ability is a plus.
• Reasoning Ability: Ability to troubleshoot to define and identify problems. Collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions to take prompt corrective actions.
• Computer Skills: Windows Operating Systems, Microsoft Office Suite, Visio, electronic mail; graphics; technical network diagrams, process flowcharts.
Utilize advanced tools like Netcapture, Wireshark, VMware, and Level 1 hypervisors for diagnostics, monitoring, and virtualized environments.
Configure and manage networking devices, including Palo Alto firewalls, Cisco routers, and switches.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, talk, and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without assistance. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee’s working environment may be loud. The employee may be required to adhere to MHPSA and customer safety procedures including but not limited to, the use of personal protection equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, goggles, hearing and fall protection).
The employee should be able to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, for installations and troubleshooting systems as circumstances demand.
