Role Overview

The Principal Manufacturing Trainer is a senior technical training and qualification resource responsible for building workforce capability within an assigned manufacturing discipline. The role leads structured on-the-job training (OJT), using approved Work Instructions (WI) as the task-performance standard and Training Evaluation Standards (TES) as the basis for training progression, proficiency evaluation, and qualification. The position develops trainers, improves objective and audit-ready qualification practices, and leads complex or cross-functional training initiatives. When qualified and authorized, the position may perform direct work to support business needs; such work must remain secondary to training responsibilities and may not exceed 25% of working time.

Key Responsibilities

•   Deliver structured OJT, cross-training, qualification, and onboarding activities using approved WI and TES.

•   Provide hands-on instruction, coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance using approved WI, TES, procedures, materials, qualification criteria, and job aids.

•   Deliver training assessments and evaluations with process owners, technical authorities, subject matter experts, and document control to maintain WI alignment.

•   Evaluate proficiency through practical demonstration and approved TES assessments; recommend readiness, additional OJT, or reassessment using defined criteria, and escalate performance, conduct, safety, or compliance concerns.

•   Coordinate OJT priorities, schedules, and resources with trainers and leadership; communicate qualification progress, proficiency concerns, and skill gaps, and support skills-matrix accuracy.

•   Identify skill gaps and partner with Operations, Quality, Engineering, Safety, Training, and other stakeholders to address workforce capability needs.

•   Support Train-the-Trainer programs; train, mentor, and evaluate trainers on WI, TES, and the approved OJT process, and complete or recommend qualification actions within approved authority.

•   Lead plant-level initiatives and, when assigned, align OJT and qualification practices across departments or NAM sites.

•   Maintain complete, traceable, audit-ready TES, OJT, training, qualification, and applicable certification or authorization records.

•   Review TES and training materials for WI alignment and shop-floor use; maintain technical currency and recommend updates when requirements or standard work change.

•   Reinforce WI-defined safety, quality, technical, housekeeping, and work-practice expectations throughout OJT.

•   Use TES results and other approved evidence to evaluate OJT effectiveness and improve training, qualification, standard work, and workforce capability.

•   Serve as the senior technical training and qualification resource for manufacturing inspection, including dimensional, visual, and applicable nondestructive examination methods used within the assigned inspection area.

•   Develop and support WI-based OJT and TES-based evaluation for applicable inspection methods, including radiographic inspection procedures referencing ASTM E1742/E1742M and magnetic particle inspection procedures aligned with ASTM E3024/E3024M, while maintaining separation between examination technique requirements and product acceptance criteria.

•   Train and evaluate personnel in the proper selection, use, care, verification, and applicable TPM requirements of inspection equipment, precision gauges, fixtures, CMMs, and other measurement systems, including calibration awareness, result documentation, traceability, and controlled-record requirements.

•   Coach inspection personnel and trainers in evaluating complex or ambiguous indications and measurement results, including when to recommend additional examination, escalation, containment, nonconformance action, or review by the designated technical or quality authority.

•   Perform direct work within the assigned discipline when qualified and authorized, consistent with the position limits and primary purpose.

•   Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures; report unsafe activities through established channels.

•   Protect confidential and proprietary information, maintain honesty, integrity, and professional conduct, and contribute to a positive, respectful work environment.

•   Support operational needs across shifts, sites, or departments as required by business need, including alternate shifts, overtime, weekends, or temporary support at another work location.

•   Perform other duties consistent with the purpose and level of the position.

Requirements

•   High school diploma or equivalent required; related technical certification or associate degree preferred.

•   Typically 12 years of progressively responsible experience in power generation, manufacturing, or a comparable industrial environment, including advanced experience in the assigned discipline.

•   Typically 1 to 3 years of demonstrated experience delivering or supporting structured training, qualification, coaching, mentoring, or workforce skills development; experience developing materials, evaluating proficiency, or developing trainers preferred.

•   Equivalent combinations of education, technical training, certifications, and relevant experience will be considered.

•   Cross-functional experience in Operations, Quality, Engineering, Safety, Maintenance, or Training preferred.

•   Advanced practical and technical knowledge of assigned-discipline processes, procedures, equipment, requirements, and training methods.

•   Broad understanding of manufacturing processes and upstream and downstream relationships.

•   Working knowledge of manufacturing safety, quality, standard work, document control, traceability, and audit readiness.

•   Ability to interpret and apply approved procedures, WI, technical requirements, drawings, specifications, and acceptance or qualification criteria.

•   Knowledge of OJT documentation, WI-based instruction, TES-based progression and qualification, compliance records, and evidence-based proficiency evaluation.

•   Senior inspector-level knowledge of inspection processes, approved procedures, Work Instructions, drawings, specifications, acceptance criteria, quality requirements, and the relationship of inspection activities to upstream and downstream manufacturing processes.

•   Technical knowledge required to train, coach, and evaluate personnel in dimensional and visual inspection and, when qualified and authorized, applicable NDE methods such as radiographic testing, magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing, and penetrant testing.

•   Understanding of the employer’s approved certification program and applicable requirements aligned with SNT-TC-1A or ANSI/ASNT CP-189, together with relevant internal procedures, customer requirements, and quality-system controls.

•   Strong instruction, coaching, mentoring, facilitation, interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.

•   Ability to translate complex technical work into clear, practical training and qualification materials; demonstrate tasks; verify understanding; evaluate performance; and document objective qualification evidence.

•   Ability to lead initiatives and influence consistent practices without direct supervisory authority, coordinate multiple priorities, and adapt to operational needs.

•   Strong accuracy, documentation, confidentiality, and procedural-compliance practices.

•   Ability to speak, read, and write in English and explain technical concepts, requirements, and work methods clearly for the audience; additional language skills preferred when relevant to workforce or business needs.

•   Ability to interpret technical and procedural requirements, exercise sound judgment within established policies and escalation paths, assess complex or ambiguous work, identify risk, and recommend corrective, containment, escalation, or development actions.

•   Proficiency with business software and digital tools used to develop content, access controlled documents, communicate, and record training or qualification activity.

•   Ability to use required learning, document-control, skills-management, enterprise, or production systems; SAP or comparable enterprise-system experience preferred.

•   Ability to obtain and maintain required training, qualifications, certifications, licenses, and authorizations applicable to the position and assigned technical area.

•   Ability to work in manufacturing, shop-floor, classroom, office, and training environments, with regular standing, walking, bending, talking, hearing, and use of hands as required.

•   Ability to meet assigned-area physical and environmental requirements, which may include lifting, reaching, climbing, working at height, confined-space entry, respirator use, exposure to loud noise, moving equipment, industrial materials, or chemicals, and use of designated personal protective equipment.
