As a Occupational Nurse here is what you’ll be doing at the core, day to day:
- Responsible for coordinating various health and safety practices & programs designed to safeguard all employees in a work environment. Coordinate employee injuries and manage worker compensation claims.
- Administrate and manage worker compensation claims from a medical aspect. Assist the employee through the claim process and develop a treatment/rehabilitation plan with the treating physician for each employee with an illness or injury. Manage claimants, physicians, and the State Worker Compensation claim managers to expedite the employee’s Return-to-work status. In addition, will educate all stakeholders on the medical aspect of the injured/ill employees. Facilitates a timely and appropriate return to work by assisting providers, supervisors, and employees with medical issues relating to transition duty and job accommodation.
- Coordinating and monitoring the quality of the medical and rehabilitative care provided to employees with work-related injuries/illnesses.
- Administrate the DOT drug and alcohol program and coordinate with the MRO. This includes sample collection, sampling shipping, forwarding results to MRO, and data maintenance (data files and database).
- Develop, implement, and conduct a Fitness for Duty (FFD) review process for employees coming back from an illness and/or injury.
- Maintain employee injury/illness database and provide periodical reports to management regarding safety performance versus targets. This also includes maintaining the OSHA recording documentation (OSHA 300).
- Develop and maintain employee medical and/or exposure records, according to the American Association of Occupation Health Nurses and Occupation Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
- Provide and/or coordinate employee events. Events may include but are not limited to eye exams screening, blood drives, health fairs, flu shots, and wellness-type programs as well as community services activities.
- Provide required and maintain immunization records for employees traveling out of the country.
- Perform all services associated with respirator medical. Develop a process to reduce the time to receive employee medical clearance and results. Provide respirator fit testing and training to employees who receive medical clearance.
- Perform audiogram of employees in the HCP and communicate test results to employees. Coordinate medical evaluations and communicate results and conduct action plans for employees with regulatory threshold shifts.
- Perform occupational health monitoring and occupational hygiene evaluations for chemical and noise exposure. Assist in providing proper PPE recommendations based on the task, exposure, and duration.
- Assist in developing, implementing, and documenting EH&S training.
- Assist in the development, implementation, and follow-up evaluations of the EH&S program, which includes but is not limited to ergonomics.
- Triage work-related injuries and coordinate those services.
- Assist the facility’s safety and wellness committee.
- Any other task as assigned.
Here’s what is required to succeed as an Occupational Nurse:
- Candidate must be current with an unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state(s) of employment and practice is required.
- 3-5 years of occupational health nurse-related experience, including progressive work in Industrial Safety and related Worker’s Compensation reduction programs preferred.
- Baccalaureate degree in nursing or equivalent and certification in occupational health nursing is preferred.
- Some Travel is required.
- Should possess interpersonal and communication skills and can plan, organize, work independently, manage multiple services (projects) and tasks, and make independent nursing judgements.
