Role Overview
The Engineer III, Controls Service - Steam Turbine is an advanced engineering role with primary accountability for steam turbine controls service support. The role is centered on steam turbine control logic, sequencing, protection interfaces, valve and actuator controls, instrumentation, HMIs, alarms, control system hardware, and field implementation of controls modifications that improve steam turbine operability, reliability, safety, and maintainability. The engineer evaluates operating issues, develops and implements controls enhancements, adjusts control settings, supports logic and graphics changes, and recommends instrument and control system hardware or software modifications for steam turbine equipment and associated plant systems. The role also supports integrated combined-cycle control interfaces with gas turbine (GT), Balance of Plant (BOP), and Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) systems when steam turbine operation depends on coordinated plant permissives, trips, runbacks, bypass systems, steam admission, condenser vacuum, feedwater, attemperation, or other plant support functions. In this role, the engineer performs complex assignments with limited supervision, makes technical recommendations, provides direct customer and field support, and mentors less experienced engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the evaluation and enhancement of steam turbine control system operations as the primary focus of the role, including steam turbine start-up, loading, unloading, shutdown, trip logic, protection interfaces, valve control, auxiliary sequencing, alarm response, and field implementation of control logic or graphics modifications.
- Provide technical support and dispositions to resolve emergent steam turbine controls issues during outages, commissioning, start-up, troubleshooting, and operating events, including time-critical support for critical path activities when required.
- Serve as a steam turbine controls subject matter contributor for service engineering support, with emphasis on interpreting steam turbine control narratives, functional logic, control drawings, alarm and trip logic, sequencing, permissives, instrumentation feedback, and control system interfaces required to support outage, commissioning, and operational troubleshooting.
- Lead the preparation of functional logic descriptions in text form by extracting functional requirements from P&IDs, system descriptions, component specifications, operating procedures, sequence documents, and other plant design documents to define the objective, reason, and technical basis for control logic changes.
- Lead the preparation and review of design documents including SAMA logic drawings, control narratives, specifications, work procedures, checklists, validation plans, test plans, commissioning support documents, and as-built documentation in accordance with approved company procedures.
- Analyze operational data from steam turbine controls, turbine auxiliaries, valve position feedback, trip and alarm history, permissive status, sequence timing, and related plant systems to establish current operating characteristics, identify abnormal behavior, benchmark performance, and support development of control system enhancements using PI, Excel, historian tools, trend data, event logs, or other data acquisition software.
- Provide diagnostic support through root cause analysis and recommend improvements to steam turbine control logic, software, hardware, instruments, actuators, HMIs, CPUs, communication networks, servo systems, control valves, stop valves, intercept valves, bypass or admission interfaces, protective functions, and related control interfaces.
- Provide technical support to field service and commissioning personnel on the interpretation and application of design criteria, operating requirements, controls architecture, logic implementation, and service engineering practices for steam turbine control systems.
- Support control system platforms and related equipment as applicable to the fleet, including Mitsubishi control systems and other plant control platforms such as Netmation, Diasys UP-V, Ovation, T-3000, and similar distributed control or turbine control systems. Use Steam Turbine Service Engineering documentation and workflow systems as needed, including Windchill, SharePoint Online / Steam Turbine Team Site, Inspire! Diamond Service Network, Gizumo, Steam Turbine Unit List, Work Process Breakdown (WPB) documents, Drawing Request Forms (DRFs), Technical Support Requests (TSRs), O&M manuals, technical bulletins, field service reports, and applicable design or service engineering reference materials.
- Support controls integration across combined-cycle plant equipment, including steam turbine, gas turbine (GT), BOP, and HRSG control functions. Examples may include coordination of steam turbine start permissives with GT/HRSG steam conditions, condenser vacuum permissives, gland steam and seal steam interfaces, lube oil and hydraulic oil auxiliary sequencing, turning gear controls, feedwater pump or condensate system permissives, boiler feed pump turbine interfaces, steam bypass and dump valve logic, HRSG drum level or feedwater control interfaces, desuperheater or attemperator spray controls, duct burner permissives, and plant runback or trip coordination.
- Interface with customers in office meetings and on site to represent the company with technical expertise, professional judgment, responsiveness, and customer sensitivity to support a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Coordinate with internal engineering, field service, design engineering, LTSA, MHI, vendors, and cross-functional stakeholders to obtain consensus on logic, hardware, and system integration changes and to promote unified control system applications.
- Apply understanding of steam turbine operation, auxiliary system operation, electrical and control interfaces, and plant process systems to troubleshoot service issues using approved practices, procedures, and sound engineering judgment.
- Provide engineering input to support development of outage, installation, commissioning, retrofit, and controls modification procedures and schedules.
- Ensure fleet experience, operational feedback, lessons learned, and recurring controls issues are communicated back to design engineering, service engineering, and applicable stakeholders to support continuous improvement.
- Identify and recommend product and service improvements that improve customer satisfaction, delivery speed, quality, reliability, cost effectiveness, maintainability, and operational performance.
- Support ISO 9001 audit readiness, compliance activities, documentation quality, design control, and configuration control methods used within Service Engineering.
- Mentor less experienced engineers on steam turbine operation, controls architecture, control logic practices, troubleshooting methods, documentation expectations, and service engineering policies and procedures.
- Perform other such duties as may be required.
